The city and activities
Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, boasts a wide range of cultural and tourist attractions. It's the ideal base for a city break in your own country. Hotel Courage is located on the Waalkade, a stone's throw from the charming city center with the Grote Markt, Kronenburger Park, and the Hezelstraatjes. There's a wide variety of shops and restaurants. Nijmegen is a true student city, ensuring a lively square every day of the week. Late-night shopping runs until 9:00 PM on Thursdays, and the city center is open every Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The traditional (fresh) market is held on Mondays and Saturdays.
Our recommendations:
- The Grote Markt with the statue of "Mariken van Nieumeghen." The old weigh house houses a restaurant with a large terrace offering a magnificent view of the entire market square.
- The Grote Kerk (Great Church) or St. Stevenskerk, including the tower. Tours are by appointment only via: www.gildenijmegen.nl
- Hezelstraatjes. From the Grote Markt, you can descend the Hezelstraatjes, where time seems to have stood still. Centuries-old buildings house more than 200 specialty shops. At the bottom of the Hezelstraatjes, you'll arrive at 'Kronenburger Park', made famous by Frank Boeijen. In this park, you can still admire remnants of the 15th-century city wall.
- Valkhof Park & Museum. This is where the city's foundations lie. Several ruins can still be visited, as can the St. Nicholas Chapel (built in 1030). The Chapel is open daily except Mondays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Several city walks also depart from here upon request. For inquiries, please contact info@valkhof.nl. The adjacent museum houses one of the largest archaeological finds from (primarily) the Roman period. It also hosts changing collections and exhibitions. Open Tuesday through Sunday, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- MuZIEum. This experiential museum is about seeing and not seeing.
- The National Bicycle Museum Velorama. Here you'll find the entire history of our national mode of transport, as well as bicycles from the Tour de France and our royal family!
- Museum De Bastei. This cultural and natural history museum is located directly behind the hotel and is well worth a visit.
- City Brewery De Hemel. This beautiful Nijmegen brewery brews a variety of beers, and the tour and tasting are definitely not to be missed during your visit to Nijmegen.
- Van Lymborch Brothers House. Here you can learn all about the medieval brothers who created beautiful books of hours for the nobility and royal families.

In the immediate vicinity you will find various sights, museums, city parks, shops and restaurants to complete your visit to the "Imperial City".
A city walk through the centuries-old city center, shopping, going out, or taking a chance at the adjacent Holland Casino—everything is possible for a successful city break or holiday.
